Some wines are born from a perfectly defined idea. Others appear along the way, when experience, curiosity, and the desire to continue improving lead to a new expression.
This is how Ànima de l’Avi Arrufí was born, a white wine from Celler Piñol made with white Grenache from old vines. A wine that shares its origin with L’Avi Arrufí Blanc, but found its own identity thanks to a different approach to aging.
Its name summarizes what it represents: the soul of some vineyards, of a calcareous terroir, and of a family history deeply linked to Terra Alta.
The origin: a new perspective on L’Avi Arrufí Blanc
The story begins with L’Avi Arrufí Blanc, one of Celler Piñol's most iconic wines. Made with white Grenache from the family’s oldest vines, it is fermented and aged for seven months in French oak barrels.
Over time, a question arose at the winery: how could we preserve the body, structure, and complexity of that white Grenache while reducing the aromatic influence of the wood?
The goal was to obtain a fresher and more vibrant wine, capable of displaying the variety and the soil it comes from with greater clarity.
The first decision was to incorporate a small portion of wine aged in an egg-shaped concrete tank into the production of L’Avi Arrufí Blanc. That trial was intended to bring freshness and balance to the whole, but the result surprised the winery team.
The wine aged in the egg had a personality of its own.
From a small trial to a wine with its own identity
The response from that white Grenache was so interesting that Celler Piñol decided to go further and create an independent wine.
Without the dominant presence of the barrel, the fruit, minerality, and character of the terroir appeared in a more direct way. The wine maintained volume and structure, but showed a fresher, more precise, and transparent expression.
This is how Ànima de l’Avi Arrufí was born.
The name is no coincidence. The grapes come from the same old vines linked to L’Avi Arrufí, and the new wine preserves its essence, but expresses it from a different perspective.
If L’Avi Arrufí Blanc shows the dialogue between white Grenache and wood, L’Ànima focuses on the purity of the variety and the landscape that has watched it grow.
Why aging in egg-shaped tanks?
Egg-shaped tanks allow wine to be aged without incorporating the aromas characteristic of wood. Their shape also encourages the natural movement of the fine lees, helping to provide volume and creaminess.
The production of Ànima de l’Avi Arrufí combines stainless steel tanks with aging split between a concrete egg and a granite egg.
Each material has its own function:
-
The concrete egg facilitates slight micro-oxygenation and contributes to giving the wine complexity and volume.
-
The granite egg, being less porous, helps preserve freshness and reinforce its saline and mineral profile.
This combination allows for the balance that was sought from the beginning: a wine with body and structure, yet also fresh, vibrant, and faithful to white Grenache.
White Grenache from old vines and calcareous terroir
Ànima de l’Avi Arrufí is a 100% white Grenache wine from old vines, sourced from five estates with different soils and altitudes.
The vines grow on clay-limestone soils, poor in organic matter, characteristic of Terra Alta. This origin is reflected in the wine's profile: freshness, minerality, saline character, and a marked sensation of dry stone.
Not being conditioned by wood aromas, the white Grenache is presented with greater clarity. Ripe white fruit, peach, apricot, and aniseed and balsamic nuances appear, accompanied by a creamy mouthfeel and a long finish.
For Juanjo Galcerà Piñol, director and winemaker at Celler Piñol, this is probably the wine that best conveys what an old-vine white Grenache can become when it is allowed to speak with its own voice.
A wine that also speaks of family
L’Avi Arrufí represents a fundamental figure in the history of the Piñol family: the great-grandfather, a winegrower and precursor to the family project.
Naming this wine Ànima de l’Avi Arrufí was a way to keep that heritage alive. It was not just about creating a new brand, but about recognizing the origin of the winery and remembering the person who began working these lands before the family wine ever reached a bottle.
The wine thus unites two ways of looking at the world: the knowledge received from previous generations and the desire to experiment to continue moving forward.
Tradition and innovation do not appear as opposing ideas. One gives meaning to the other.
Three concepts to understand Ànima de l’Avi Arrufí
If we had to define this wine with three ideas, they would be:
White Grenache, minerality, and calcareous terroir.
White Grenache is its origin and protagonist. Minerality defines much of its expression. And the calcareous terroir of Terra Alta is the thread that connects the vineyard, the wine, and the family history.
Ànima de l’Avi Arrufí is, ultimately, the result of listening to an old vineyard and seeking the best way to transmit what it contains: the variety, the soil, the landscape, and the memory of four generations.
